“Join the world’s first collaborative online orchestra.

We invite musicians from around the world to audition for the YouTube Symphony Orchestra. Your video entries will be combined into the first ever collaborative virtual performance, and the world will select the best of you to perform at New York City’s Carnegie Hall in April 2009.

…Professionals and amateur musicians of all ages, locations and instruments are welcome to audition for the YouTube Symphony Orchestra by submitting a video performance of a new piece written for the occasion by the renowned Chinese composer Tan Dun (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). We have tools to help you learn the music, rehearse with the conductor, and upload your part for the collaborative video.

And how do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice and upload. Send us your talent video performance from a list of recommended pieces. Finalists will be chosen by a judging panel and YouTube users to travel to New York in April 2009, to participate in the YouTube Symphony Orchestra summit, and play at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas.

The deadline for all video submissions is January 28, 2009.”

All instruments are welcome to play in the YouTube Symphony – there is even a “conversion chart” available for more traditionally uncommon instruments such as Sitar and Duduk!

Virtual Music Library!!

I just stumbled across this AMAZING collection of virtual music, and I’m hooked on the idea!

For a mere $20 each, one can purchase, for example, the complete string quartets (score and parts) of Beethoven and Brahms! Or Haydn or Mozart! Or the Ultimate Collection of Violin Sonatas, Violin Concertos, Violin Solos and Duets, or Violin Methods and Etudes. There are Orchestral Collections as well, where one can find instrumental parts of the great orchestral literature. Included with each collection is Supplemental Material, such as composer biographies, program notes, and terms. And for those who aren’t violinists, there are a myriad of collections for other instruments and ensembles.

Imagine having entire collections of history’s greatest music right on your computer, instead of taking up valuable space in your home or studio! Imagine being able to print out unlimited copies (formatted for Adobe Reader) for you, your colleagues, and your students! And imagine being able to find exactly what you’re looking for, easily and without headache!

Congratulations and good luck to two of my students, Marissa John and Sharon Tang, who will be performing at the ASTA 43rd Annual Bowed Strings Solo Recital/Competition this Saturday! Both students have prepared the first movement of Vivaldi‘s Concerto in A Minor, and will be accompanied by Nico Maracut.

You have both worked hard, and I hope you will enjoy this new experience!

May 18, 3pm: Concert with the Claremont Winds, featuring tuba soloist Lyndsey Hoh, winner of the Young Artists Scholarship Competition. I’ll be joining them on percussion and piano! Where?: Mudd Theater. Admission: FREE!
June 8, 9:30am: Denise Young and I will be presenting two tunes as part of the morning worship service for First Presbyterian Church of Garden Grove! Admission?: FREE!
