The U.S. Copyright Office “is conducting a beta test of its web-based registration system, electronic Copyright Office (eCO). Participants in eCO beta testing will file basic registration claims online at a reduced fee established for electronic filings ($35). eCO beta testing covers basic registration claims for literary works, visual arts works, performing arts works, sound recordings, and single serials. Other claim types and services will be offered via eCO at a later date.”

This process is quick and easy-to-use (and ten dollars cheaper than conventional filing)! Once an account is set up, you can use eCO for any future claims, with all your pertinent information saved for later as a template. I was able to fill out a typical application online, pay the fee online through a site backed by the U.S. Treasury, then upload all three files related to my claim online. Just about any form of file is accepted for upload, and you have the alternative option of mailing hard copies into the Copyright Office. eCO’s only limitation is that it currently supports only Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and Netscape Navigator 7.02: “Internet Explorer 7.0 and Firefox 2.0 may work also. The Safari browser is not currently certified for use with the eCO system.” However, being a Safari user, I got around this by using Camino and had no problems.

To become a beta tester for eCO click here, for information and a link to the online invitation application. Once applying, the Copyright Office will contact you by email on how to proceed next - just follow all email instructions carefully, and you’re set!

This Saturday at 8pm, the renowned “Daughters of Tuva” - Tyva-Kyzy - will be performing in Claremont, CA!!

Performing at the Bridges Hall of Music on the campus of Pomona College in the Claremont Colleges, this all-female throat singing group from Tuva will perform on traditional instruments and in traditional garb, gracing audiences with their charm and talent. Many thanks to my colleague, Devan Miller of the Tuva Trader, and to the Pomona College for putting this together!

Since writing my college paper on the topic of “Tuvan Throat Singing and the Legend of the Horse Head Fiddle”, in which Tyva Kyzy is featured, I’ve gained a great interest in this beautiful art and culture, and I am truly looking forward to attending this Saturday’s concert!

You can find this free event and further information listed on this calendar.

…when you have more projects and obligations than time?

It was suggested to me that this might be a good topic to throw out there, especially since I have recently been asked many times by those who catch a glimmer of my regular weekly schedule: “How do you do it all?”

First, to give you an idea of what I am currently immersed in, I teach approximately thirty-five students every week, between two community schools, a community music store, and my own Lark Ascending studio. Off and on, I am also assigned various weekly violin classes or coaching sessions in the midst of my regular teaching schedule, and, once in a while, I like to schedule “violin parties” for my private students to get together and play and “talk shop”. On top of that, I am available to perform for various situations (one-day concerts, rehearsals with friends, as well as multi-day festivals or recording projects), and I am on hire for writing compositions and arrangements. I also work on my own current compositional projects, and, as if that weren’t enough, I am currently involved in a massive novel-writing project - a sci-fi trilogy that I’ve been working on for the past twelve years now, in my spare time, of which I am extremely proud.

And then, there’s school. Thankfully, I’ve finished my life as an undergrad and will be moving on to graduate school this Fall. And, finally, there’s my own private practice time, my haven from the world.

Now, I’m not trying to say that I’m the only busy one here; after all, when there’s a make-up lesson to be had, too often I have just as much trouble fitting into the parents’ schedules, just as they do mine. But, my schedule still seems to baffle and impress fellow teachers and dear parents who must somehow work around it. So, here are just a few tips that have been working for me so far. They may work for you, or they may not, but it never hurts to share some basic thoughts.

Located at the bottom of my Tuvan Throat Singing link on the sidebar, you may now find Additional Reading, Authored by Yours Truly, which is the beginning of a collection of various essays and such that I have written, which others have deemed worthy of posting.

The first two papers to be found under this collection are Disasters in Art and Distinguishing Alchemy from Science. The first, in my humble opinion, is rather simplistic, and you may need to refer to the works cited page while comparing the statements in the essay with the images found at the end of it, to make better sense of what is what. But it’s a fun little survey of artwork that has been created in memory of three separate natural disasters that have greatly impacted human society. The second is a much more involved work exploring the definitions society has given to “science” by way of comparing the work of seventeenth century alchemists and chemists. The results may intrigue you…

Enjoy these writings at your leisure. I hope to post further writings for your enjoyment as they come up.
